How to store coffee

Roasted coffee is a sensitive product. It is spoiled by high humidity, light and contact with oxygen, it starts to lose its taste and flavor, so proper packaging is very important.

It is known that loss of coffee taste is caused by oxidizing when coffee grains contact oxygen.

To prevent this, ground coffee is vacuum-packed, and ground coffee is packed into containers with a valve. If coffee pack is not provided with an air valve, coffee must be degassed before packing – it means it shall «settle», so that carbon dioxide, produced in beans during roasting, could emanate (if this is not done, coffee packs shall inflate and burst). But during degassing the coffee beans inevitably contact with air, impairing coffee taste and flavor.

Air valve prevents the air entering the package, but allows emanated carbon dioxide to exit.

Thus, coffee does not contact with air, so its taste and flavor are preserved best.

Multilayered materials with higher protective capacities are used to protect coffee from light and moisture.

When keeping coffee at home, remember that coffee can absorb other flavors easily, so do not keep products with a strong flavor near it. It is better to keep coffee tightly closed in a cool dark place.
